Panel discussion | How can domestic violence prevention programmes better protect children?

Domestic violence affects whole families, with children often experiencing either direct abuse or indirect consequences. So while a gender lens is useful in supporting women, could more involvement of the child protection sector also help reduce violence in the home?

This panel discussion brings together six practitioners from around the world who have worked with families and children to reduce domestic violence. Attendees will hear about the diverse approaches taken, as well as ideas for better aligning child protection actors with the women’s rights sector. There will also be an opportunity for Q&As.

Panelists:

  • Host: Deep Purkayastha (Praajak, India)
  • Iftekhar Ahmed (Centre for Services and Information on Disability, Bangladesh)
  • Dr. Champa Gunesekera (Foundation for Innovative Social Development, Sri Lanka)
  • Suzanne Clulow (Children in Distress Network, South Africa)
  • Elizabeth Blama (Children Assistance Program, Liberia)
  • Nancy Álvarez (Asociación Nacional Contra el Maltrato Infantil, Guatemala)

The panelists’ approaches to domestic violence prevention are all detailed in the Family for Every Child Toolkit, ‘Prevention of Domestic Violence against Children during Covid-19’. This can be downloaded prior to the event here.

The event will be held in English, with Spanish interpretation available.
