As part of International Social Work Month, Butterflies is organising a webinar on the importance of Nurturing Childhood. This year’s theme is - Children’s right to live in a safe, protective family and community environment ensuring their physical, emotional and social wellbeing.

The Webinar will focus on the following three areas of social work practice:

1. Mental health of children and adolescents. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of the emotional well-being of children as well as their family members.

2. Alliances of local CSOs and its importance to collaborate, share knowledge and practices and advocate for policy shifts, amend laws, programmes to bring a sustainable positive impact on the lives of the marginalised.

3. Children in conflict zones. Significant numbers of children lose their childhood due to senseless conflicts and a number of them are trafficked for the same. Children are the worst hit by conflict, war, killed, orphaned or separated from family care.

Speakers

1. Dr Achal Bhagat, a Psychiatrist specialising in children and adolescent mental health. He is a practising Psychiatrist and founder of an organisation called SARTHAK. SARTHAK works on mental health issues of children and adolescents. Mental health (emotional wellbeing) has become a recognisable health issue, especially during this pandemic.

2. Amanda Griffith, CEO of Family for Every Child (FFEC) UK, a global alliance of 41 CSOs from 37 countries and one of the key people in founding FFEC. Amanda will share Family’s impactful work over the last decade. The Alliance speaks of the power of local CSOs importance in advocating for the rights of the very marginalised communities, empirical research by practitioners to enhance the body of knowledge in the social sector, test existing theories, and develop new theories and practices rooted in social realities.

3. Dr. Digambar Narzary of NEDAN, founder and CEO of NEDAN Foundation based in Assam, in eastern India. Nedan works with children in conflict zones and trafficked children. This is another important area for child victims of armed conflict, loss of childhood and parental/family care. This topic becomes relevant today with the unimaginable disruption happening in the lives of children across the world where there is conflict and war.

4. Prof.(Dr.) Kalpana Sarathy, Dean and Deputy Director, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwhati Campus, Assam will moderate the webinar. Prof. Kalpana Sarathy is a known academician and researcher who has vast experience in the area of mental health and child rights.
