Launch of Caring for Boys Affected by Sexual Violence in South Africa Research

CINDI and Childline in collaboration with Family for Every Child have the pleasure of inviting you to the launch of the research findings for the Caring for Boys Affected by Sexual Violence study in South Africa. This research explored the role normative social constructs of masculinity and sexuality play in the sexual abuse and harmful sexual behaviour of boys. Recommendations for practice and advocacy are provided.

Moderator:

Rian Perry 

Rian is a Criminal Justice Social Worker with a decade of experience in the private and public social service sectors, where he has worked as social worker, probation officer and programme coordinator. His specialist training and experience in the criminal field include doing assessments of child and adult offenders, providing expert testimony in criminal courts, as well as the facilitation of intervention programmes regarding problematic sexual and violent behaviours.

Presenters:

Lopa Bhattacharjee, Senior Programme Advisor, Family for Every Child

Lopa Bhattacharjee works for the global alliance, Family for Every Child as a Senior Programme Advisor, managing portfolios of preventing sexual violence against children, reintegration and child participation. Lopa has 21+ years of experience of working with a range of CSOs, INGOs, networks and government systems on violence against children, child protection and safeguarding in countries of Asia and other parts of the world. Prior to joining Family for Every Child, Lopa headed the Child Protection Programme in Terre des hommes Foundation in India.  Lopa started her career as a social worker supporting children affected by trafficking and child sexual exploitation that enabled her deeper understanding on the need for children to grow up in safe and caring families. Lopa also currently Co-Chairs the CSO task force for engaging children and young people in the UN-CRC’s Day of General Discussions on Children’s Rights and Alternative Care.  Lopa lives in India.

Suzanne Clulow, Child Advocacy Programme Manager, CINDI

Suzanne Clulow is the Child Advocacy Programme Manager at CINDI through which she is involved in networking, training, child participation, research and advocacy with other CSOs, parents, caregivers and children.  She has a Masters’ degree in International Relations from St. Andrew’s University in Scotland and has been working in the NGO sector for over 20 years. She is passionate about children, in particular in ensuring that enough is invested through policy and practice to support children growing up in safe and nurturing families. 

Joan van Niekerk, Child Rights and Child Protection Consultant

Dr Joan van Niekerk currently works as a child rights consultant to CBOs and NGOs working in child protection and with adult survivors of abuse.  Her recent work includes working on the SA Law Reform Commission Project Committee on Child Pornography. She is a former President of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and has served in numerous key positions within NGOs and expert advisory groups in relation to child protection. She holds a PhD in Social Work.

Dumisile Nala, National Executive Officer, Childline South Africa

Dumisile Nala holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and has practiced in multidisciplinary settings in both South Africa and the UK gaining extensive knowledge in child protection, child mental health, foster care and adoption. Since 2009 she has served as the National Executive Officer of Childline South Africa. Ms Nala is passionate about seeing lifetime an Africa that joins forces in the protection of the African Child and the upholding of the African Child’s rights in her lifetime. She is a member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN), has served on the Executive Committee of the Yezingane Network and the Shukumisa Steering Committee.
